Stabbing suspect captured

A suspect sought in connection with a stabbing in Holton Monday evening was captured south of Holton Tuesday, according to Jackson County Sheriff Morse.

Bond and charges for the suspect, Austin Lee Whitebird, 22, of Horton were still pending at press time. 

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a report shortly before 11 p.m. Monday that a victim of a stabbing was being treated at Holton Community Hospital. 

Morse said that officers from both the sheriff’s office and the Holton Police Department responded to the hospital where a 26-year-old male was being treated for multiple stab wounds.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was transported to a Topeka hospital and was in critical condition with life-threatening wounds, Morse said.  

Officers and investigators processed the crime scene, which was determined to be 123 New York Ave. in Holton. 

On Tuesday morning, Morse reported to media outlets that his office was searching for Whitebird and seeking any assistance from the public on his location. 

Morse identified Whitebird as a possible suspect in the incident who allegedly fled the scene of the crime. Whitebird was considered armed and dangerous.
