Marjorie Abney 1922-2015
Marjorie “Ki gon” Abney, 93, of Mayetta, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015 at her home.
She was born April 2, 1922, in the same home that she passed away, in Mayetta, the daughter of William and Nettie (Kitchkommie) Wapp.
Marjorie graduated from Haskell Indian School in 1941. Soon after graduation, she moved to Kansas City, Mo., working in a factory for the War Effort. She worked as a seamstress for Rice-Moore and later for Betty Rose, retiring after 30 years and 6 months in 1979. She then moved to Mayetta working as a janitor for USD 337 in the district office and elementary school for approximately six years. For more than 13 years, Marjorie enjoyed traveling as “Snow Birds” to Winter Haven, Calif., with her husband, John, until 1998.
She was born as a full blood Native American, Sac and Fox Nation and Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, although she was a member of Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri. Marjorie was also a member of International Garment Workers of America.
On New Year’s Eve in 1943, Marjorie married John W. Abney in Kansas City, Mo. He preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1999. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Wapp; a sister, Alvena Dawes; and her companion in later years, Leroy Mzhickteno.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan Rebar of Mayetta; a granddaughter, Twen Barton (Harold) of Tonganoxie; and two great-granddaughters, Madea and Shadoe Barton.
Drum services will be held Monday evening, Aug. 24, 2015, at the Danceground Building west of Mayetta. Burial will be held Tuesday afternoon in the Mayetta Cemetery. Marjorie will lie in state at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton until Monday afternoon.
