Glory Days events set
There’s plenty of activity planned this weekend as high school alumni from Holton and the surrounding area come home for Glory Days activities, including the annual festival, classic vehicle show and parade. But there’s also plenty going on away from Holton’s Town Square this weekend, it has been reported.
Glory Days activities will kick off the Memorial Day and alumni weekend with the Holton Lions Club’s annual fund-raising hamburger feed from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday on the Jackson County Courtyard. The Lions will be selling burgers, chips and soda for $5 a plate. Starting at 6 p.m., Gary Bell and Friends will provide a free concert at the courtyard gazebo, and those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
On Saturday, Glory Days activities on the Square start at 9 a.m. with craft and food booths, as well as the annual Glory Days Antique and Hot Rod Car Show. Classic cars, trucks and motorcycles from all around the area will be featured, and prizes will be given to the best vehicles starting at 1:30 p.m., it was reported.
The Lions Club will hold a garden tractor pull that morning at the former Jackson County Fairgrounds site north of Casey’s General Store on U.S. Highway 75, with weigh-in starting at 10 a.m., followed by the pull at 11 a.m. The Northeast Kansas Stock Garden Tractor Pullers will run the event; visit nektractorpullers.com for rules.
The annual Glory Days alumni parade is set to take off around the Square starting at 11 a.m., and this year, alumni from all Jackson County schools are invited to join Holton High School alumni in the parade with floats of their own. Class reunions are scheduled throughout the day; a partial list is printed on Page 2 of today’s Recorder.
The annual Holton High School Alumni Banquet will be held at 6 p.m. that day in the HHS gym. This year’s featured speaker will be Chad Bontrager, deputy secretary of the Kansas Department of Agriculture and a member of the HHS Class of 2000. A post-banquet reception will follow at the Reichart Vineyard east of Holton; parking will be available at the Jackson Farmers co-op lot.

Other alumni and Memorial Day-related activities planned for this weekend include:
* Circleville will hold its annual alumni banquet on Saturday at the Circleville Rural High School gym, starting with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. and followed by a dinner at 6:30 p.m., catered by Your Place or Mine. The school’s classes of 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960 and 1965 will be recognized this year, and musical entertainment will be provided by Rod and Sherri Durst and Ellen Durst.

* Prairie Band One Stop invites classic car owners to participate in a “Cruise Night,” scheduled from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the convenience store, located at U.S. 75 and 190th Road. Craft and food vendors, drawings and promotions will be available. For more information, contact the store at 364-2463.
* The Onaga Lions Club will host a tractor and truck pull on Sunday at the Onaga Rodeo Arena, with weigh-in beginning at 4 p.m., followed by the pull. The event is sanctioned by the NK Pullers Association. Gate admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children age 5 and under. * Soldier will host a Memorial Day Dinner from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the Soldier Community Building. Breakfast biscuits and gravy, apple dumplings, coffee, tea, sandwiches, chili dogs, cakes, pies, cookies and lemonade will be served for a free-will donation.
* Circleville Masonic Lodge will host its annual Memorial Day biscuit and gravy breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday (Memorial Day) at the lodge. Free-will donations will be accepted.
