Barry Petree 1951-2026

Barry Alex Petree, 74, of Holton, passed away Saturday, July 11, 2026, at his home with family by his side.

He was born on Sept. 12, 1951, in Holton, the son of Billy Petree Jr. and Christine J. (Stilley) Petree.

Barry graduated from Holton High School in 1969. He worked alongside his father at Petree Propane in his early years and later became owner and operator of Petree Propane, retiring in 2018.

He was a proud member of The Sons of the American Legion and the Holton Golf Course.

Barry married Janet Nelson of Whiting. They later divorced but continued co-parenting their three daughters.

Survivors include his daughters, Christina Petree of Topeka, Brandy Meyers (Brent) of Paola and Kimberly Petree-Mattox of Holton; two sisters, Sharon Handley (Don) of Buckner, Mo., and Linda Kathrens of Gardner; and 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Ali Branam (Brett), Jordan Moseley (Mercedes) Easton, Garrett Misenhelter (Mallory), Brady and Kennedy, Jess Misenhelter, Eleanor and Eloise, Joshua Meyers (Gracie), Kale Meyers (Emily), Isaac Meyers, Eli Meyers, Damon Heidrich, Drew, Trey Poston, Jade Thomas, Ashlyn Mattox and Joslyn “Peanut” Mattox.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Billy and Christine Petree; and an infant brother, Gary Petree.

He was always up for a competitive round of golf, often barefoot. He was known for his quick-witted comments and comebacks and his contagious laugh. An accomplished golfer, he recorded seven holes-in-one and even scored an albatross at Cypress Ridge.

He loved his dogs, Joe and Sam, who accompanied him on his porch while drinking his favorite beverages, coffee and Budweiser. He cherished spending time with family and friends, whether on the golf course, around the table playing Five-Point Pitch or sitting on the porch. To those that loved him most, he was known as Dad, Daddy, Grandpa Barry, Papa, Uncle Barry, Brother Barry, Chucky and Bart.

Member-Guest was his favorite golf tournament, and one of his greatest joys was having the opportunity to play it twice with his granddaughter, Jade. Those rounds together became memories she will cherish forever.

Please join the family in sharing memories of him at his Celebration of Life from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 at the Holton Country Club.

Memorials may be given to the Holton Country Club, sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436. To leave a special message for the family, please visit www.mercerfuneralhomes.com
