Two Holton City Commission seats up for election in 2016

Holton residents have until noon on Tuesday, Jan. 26, to file as candidates for two positions on the Holton City Commission.

As of Wednesday, no one had filed for either position two or four on the commission. Dan Brenner currently serves as the position four commissioner after he was elected in April 2013.

Erich Campbell is the commissioner representing the position two seat. He also was elected in April 2013.

Campbell was recently selected to serve as a magistrate judge for the Second Kansas Judicial District in Pottawatomie County and will resign from his position on the city commission at the end of January, it was reported. 

The commissioners are expected to appoint a resident to fill the unexpired term until the spring election is held on April 5, it was reported.

To file for a commission seat, Jackson County Clerk Kathy Mick said that candidates must register at Holton City Hall, 430 Pennsylvania Ave., by paying a $5 filing fee. They may also file by petition by obtaining 25 signatures from local registered voters.

Holton City Commissioners serve three-year terms and meet the first and third Mondays of the month at 7 p.m. at Holton City Hall. The commission includes five members, and the city’s mayor is chosen from among those members, by those members, after the April election.

Current members include Robert Dieckmann (mayor), Tim Morris, Twila White, Erich Campbell and Dan Brenner.

Mick said that, with new state laws, this will be the last spring election in the state. In the future, city and other local elections, will be moved to the fall.
