Social worker attacks dog near Delia
A social worker was in serious, but stable condition, Friday after she was attacked by a dog in rural Delia on Friday afternoon, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.
The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was attacked by a Presa Canario dog at 10810 J. Road in rural Delia on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Indian Reservation.
“The victim arrived at the address for a visit when she was attacked by the dog,” Morse said in a press release. “The owner was not home at the time of the attack.”
After the attack, the woman was able to drive herself to the Potawatomi Tribal Fire Station for help.
The PBPN Fire Department transported the victim, who was said to be in “code red” condition, to a Topeka hospital, it was reported.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office impounded the dog at the scene, and reports are being forwarded to the Jackson County Attorney’s Office for review.
Morse said the dog is owned by Kevin McGillivary.
On Nov. 24, 2014, Jackson County deputies responded to the address south of Friday’s scene where the neighbor’s chickens had been killed and the neighbor received minor injuries from a different Presa Canario dog that was also owned by McGillivary.
During that incident, a Jackson County deputy was forced to shoot the dog in self-defense. The dog survived its injuries and was impounded but was later released by the court, Morse said. That dog was not allowed to remain in Jackson County per the court’s orders.
In April 2016, McGillivary was booked into the Jackson County Jail on a warrant for permitting a dangerous animal to be at large.
Presa Canario dogs are larger dogs and are also known as Canary Mastiffs, it was reported.
In 2015, the county approved a resolution that states that area residents who live in the unincorporated areas of Jackson County must register or re-register their dog with the county if it’s a pit bull or a hybrid of that breed.
According to the resolution, breeds that must be registered each year by April 1 include Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, Bull Terrier or a hybrid of any of those breeds.
