Second Saturday theme is "Luck of the Irish"

Holton’s Town Square is turning green this Saturday!

“Luck of the Irish” is the theme of this month’s Second Saturday promotion, spotlighting St. Patrick’s Day with a little bit of Irish culture, according to Carolyn McKee, Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce director. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, visitors to the Square can sample Irish treats — or at least “green” ones, in honor of the holiday — and listen for an Irish bagpiper.

At Penny’s, visitors can try some Guinness chocolate cake with salted caramel sauce and wash it down with an Irish crème latte. Keeping in the “spirit of the green,” Off the Square Grill will be pouring green beer and Heart to Home will offer lime green margarita samples.

Elsewhere, at the Hutchins Building on the west side of the Square, Holton’s Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will hold a soup supper and bake sale to benefit Katie Pittaway, a Holton High School alumna who has been battling kidney cancer since 2009. Free-will donations will be accepted for the soup supper.

At the Jackson County Museum, visitors can check out the “Conflict in Calhoun County: Free or Slave?” exhibit, which features Civil War uniforms, artifacts and stories. Over at The Gossip, visitors can check out wares offered by the Sew Sisters, the Little Loofus Shoppe, J’s Delightful Desserts, Totten and Company Artworks and Carolyn’s Treasures.

Other participating businesses include JM Sewing Center, Sarah’s Enchanted Cottage, Koger Variety, the Golden Fleece, the Hotspot, Uptown Treasures and Desperado’s Western Wear, NAPA Auto Parts, expressions and Quilting on the Square.

The monthly promotion is put together by the Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and sponsored in part by the Jackson County Tourism Council.
