Second Saturday to feature photo ops for families

The family photo may be one of the most important heirlooms for a person to treasure, and with Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce’s upcoming Second Saturday event, visitors to Holton’s Town Square are encouraged to bring the family for that reason.

“Family Photo Night” is the theme of May’s Second Saturday promotion, set from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 9 on the Square, according to Chamber director Carolyn McKee. The event was timed to a certain extent with Mother’s Day in mind, but as McKee noted, it’s an event for the whole family.

“When the Second Saturday committee was brainstorming on monthly ideas, we knew it was going to be around Mother’s Day, and we thought it would be a good time for families of all ages to come out,” McKee said. “Even if your mother can’t be here, or if you have a ‘diverse’ family, it will still be Family Photo Night.”

One of the highlights of the event focuses on young people, McKee said. The Wild Child Photography is planning a hands-on learning experience with cameras for kids of all ages from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., although participating youngsters must be accompanied by an adult.

“They will have a short camera lesson at Penny’s, on the west side of the Square, followed by a ‘photo safari’ scavenger hunt around the Square,” she said. “The class is geared toward those ages 6 to 13, but any age may join in the fun.”

Not to be outdone, Homestead Affordable Housing will host a “Say Cheez” photo booth on the south side of the Square.

“There are different props, and people can go in and take silly pictures,” McKee said of Homestead’s offering.

Also, photographer Sahra Meddock of Captured Creations will offer photos in either a Hollywood or “heirloom” style on the west side of the Square at J&M Sewing Center. And photographer Jim Hunley will offer a $10 Mother’s Day family portrait special at his upstairs studio on the northeast corner of the Square.

Other specials include 20 percent off certain items at Heart to Home, where “mamaritas” will be offered for adults looking for a little refreshment, McKee said. Koger Variety will also offer specials on Silver Forest earrings, Camille Backman creams, purses, billfolds, gazing balls and Mother’s Day cards.

Businesses also participating in Family Photo Night will include the Jackson County Museum, the Golden Fleece, the Gossip, Uptown Treasures and Desperado’s Western Wear, NAPA Auto Parts, expressions and Quilting on the Square.

The monthly Second Saturday promotion is held on the second Saturday of each month, promitng small-town shopping, artistic endeavors and family fun on Holton’s Town Square. For more information, call the Chamber office at 364-3963 or visit www.exploreholton.com
