Regional band to perform at Cruise Night

Next Friday, owners of classic cars, trucks and motorcycles are invited to Holton’s Town Square to take part in the annual Cruise Night festivities, presented by the Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and featuring a regionally-recognized ‘50s and ‘60s rock group.

Jimmy Dee and the Fabulous Destinations will perform during this year’s Cruise Night, scheduled from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 on the Jackson County Courtyard. Also, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Holton National Bank will hold its annual community appreciation meal on the Courtyard at no cost to the public, and the Jackson County Historical Society will be selling root beer floats.

Jimmy Dee and the Fabulous Destinations got their start in the mid-1970s after the movie “American Graffiti” gave birth to a wave of 1950s and early 1960s nostalgia that swept the country. Originally from the small west-central Kansas town of Victoria, the band played high-energy shows featuring music from the era depicted in the movie in the western half of Kansas.

The group disbanded in the early 1980s, but six members of the original group reformed in 2000 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the group, it was reported. But what was intended as a one-off reunion grew into a reformation of the band, which has since released
