Quilts to feature in Second Saturday event

This Saturday, Holton’s Town Square will be covered in quilts.

June’s Second Saturday promo­tion, with its theme of “Quilts in the Courtyard,” will feature dozens of quilts in an outdoor show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by evening activities from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in downtown Holton. The event will also feature live music, vendors, prizes and a visit from Carthage, Mo.-based quilt appraiser Lori East, along with a “Quilts of Valor” presentation involving 50 military veterans during the evening.

During the event, Jackson County Arts will exhibit eight pieces of quilt art, featuring painted and pieced quilt patterns in busi­nesses around the Square. These quilts will feature original quilt patterns painted on canvas by Carol Totten and Suzette McCord-Rogers. Painted quilt art contribu­tors will include Sandy Studebaker-Gilbert, David Schock, Linda Brownlow, Mary Schock and Marilyn Spiker.

The Jackson County Historical Society museum at the southwest corner of Fourth Street and New York Avenue will feature a heri­tage quilt exhibit from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Quilts in the exhibit date from 1858 through the 1930s and be­yond.

Early quilts in the Historical So­ciety exhibit will include an aboli­tion quilt, brought by the Buck family to the Buck’s Grove area in 1858 from Massachusetts, a hand-stitched, hand-tied snowball pattern quilt and a sofa throw woven in re­verse pattern in 1856. Quilts from the 1930s include a double wed­ding ring, a yo-yo, a Dresden plate and a 4-H pattern.

The most recent quilt in the ex­hibit dates to 1975 and was quilted and autographed by the East Grant Unit. The quilts will be on exhibit through June at the museum, which is open every Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
