Quilts in the Courtyard theme of June's Second Saturday

The third annual Quilts In The Courtyard event will be held 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 11.

The event, which is held around the Holton Square, will include the display of more than 300 colorful quilts, a variety of vendors, demonstrations and a special presentation on barn quilts.

Most of the activities during the day are free, including the chance to view more than 200 quilts on display outside in the Courtyard of the Jackson County Courthouse. In addition, 50 patriotic “Quilts of Valor” sewn as gifts for veterans of foreign conflicts will be available to view as well.

Homemade craft and product vendors will also be set up on the Courtyard that day. Several food vendors will be available. Prizes are also being given away that morning.

Inside the Courthouse, PinEllaP’s Doll Artists, a local group, will be presenting homemade cloth dolls in an “Alice In Wonderland” theme.

Painted art quilts will be hung inside the Courthouse, as well as several antique quilts.

The Jackson County Museum, located at 327 New York Ave., will have a special heirloom quilt exhibit that day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., it has been reported.

On the east side of the Square, Quilting On The Square, will host a special Barn Quilt Hoedown presentation from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. by Sue Hageman, Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail coordinator. Tickets for her presentation are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at Quilting On The Square.

Several area businesses around the Square will be holding demonstrations on a variety of arts, including spinning and weaving, glass blowing, embroidery and more.

The event in being held in conjunction with the monthly Second Saturday event, and organizers are also planning a scavenger hunt that day, encouraging participants to visit businesses around the Square.

“We’re hoping for some good weather this year,” said Becky Andreasen, one of the organizers for the event. “It brings a lot of people to the Square and area businesses. The number of people that come increases every year.”

In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled for June 18.
