Pioneer Day is Saturday

Mayetta will be hosting its 24th annual Pioneer Day on Saturday. Most of the events will take place downtown on Main Street.

The day’s events will kick off with breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge. David VanMeter will provide music downtown starting at 8 a.m. and Brad Hamilton will sing at noon.

Children and adults can start signing up for a variety of games and contests at 10 a.m. at city hall. The first contest will be the double-can toss at 9:30 a.m. followed by the turtle races for those children 15 and under. Participants are asked to bring their own turtle.

Men can sign up for the beard and mustache contest at 10 a.m. with winners announced at 10:30 a.m.

A raw egg race will be held at 10:30 a.m. following by a Jell-O-eating contest at 11 a.m. 

A pancake-flipping contest will be held at 12:30 p.m. with a cow pie toss for those 16 and older at 1:30 p.m. 

Free fire truck rides and an antique car show will be held that day. In the city park, various family-friendly activities will be held in order to raise funds for a spray park (see related article).

A flea market will held downtown beginning at 9 a.m. and demonstrations of pioneer past times will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

New this year is a poetry contest. Entries will be read off and on from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Submit your poems to M.P.D., P.O. Box 42, Mayetta, KS 66509.

For lunch, a meal will be served at the Masonic Lodge and Indian tacos will be available to purchase.

Line up for the annual parade will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Royal Valley Middle School, with the parade starting at 3 p.m. Doug and Carolyn Reicherter will serve as the grand marshals, and Patricia Keesis will be honored as the Prairie Band Potawatomi Elder Queen. 

A baked potato bar with toppings and dessert will be served at the Mayetta Christian Church, 212 Jones St., starting at 4 p.m.
