Memorial service for Eulert set for Saturday at Netawaka

A memorial service for a Jackson County native killed in a World War II air battle over Austria will be held this Saturday in Netawaka Cemetery, it was reported.

Sgt. Frederick H. Eulert of the Army Air Forces, 347th Bomber Squadron, 99th Bomber Group, was shot down in an air battle on April 2, 1944, over the District of Völkermarkt Kärnten in southern Austria. Eulert, who posthumously received an Air Medal and a Purple Heart, is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery in St. Avold, France.

According to Jack Pittaway Sr., ride chairman of the Holton VFW Post 1367 Riders and post surgeon, a memorial ceremony for Eulert will begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the cemetery, with the U.S. Army and the Veterans of Foreign Wars conducting the ceremony. Members of Eulert’s family approached the Army and the VFW about a memorial service, Pittaway said.

During the service, a flag will be presented to Eulert’s sole surviving sister, Phyllis Upchurch of Mountain Home, Ark. A 21-gun salute is also planned.

The public is invited to attend the memorial service.
