Legislators return to work Monday
The 2016 Kansas Legislature is set to begin at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, when both the House of Representatives and Senate reconvene, it has been reported.
Lawmakers will have their hands full as they attempt to close a projected $190 million state budget deficit, as well as discuss state aid to public schools and Medicaid expansion.

Representing District 62 during this legislative session is Republican Randy Garber of Sabetha. This district includes Jackson County townships north of 286th Road, including the cities of Netawaka and Whiting, Nemaha and Brown counties and a portion of Atchison County.

In the Senate, Republican Dennis Pyle of Hiawatha serves District 1. The first district senator represents most of Jackson, Pottawatomie Nemaha, Brown, Doniphan, Atchison and a portion of Marshall counties.

The Legislature consists of a 125-member House of Representatives and a 40-member Senate. Representatives are elected for a two-year term, and senators are elected for a four-year term.
The Legislature usually adjourns after 90 days in early May. Last year’s session lasted a record 114 days.
