Jackson Heights says goodbye to 30 seniors

In front of family members and friends, a total of 30 Jackson Heights High School seniors received their diplomas Sunday during the school’s graduation ceremony.

“Out in front of me, I see future teachers, future engineers, farmers – maybe a lot of farmers – and a future Beyonce,” said co-valedictorian Will Patterson. “And definitely one Slim Shady. But just remember guys. If at first you don’t succeed, you’re normal.”

Patterson and Jessica Keehn, the other co-valedictorian, stood in front of their classmates, highlighting the class’ successes, as well as sharing some advice for the future.

“We’re about to begin our adulthood where life is like a giant sandwich,” Keehn said. “The more good stuff you put into it, the better it gets. Fill your life with the things that you enjoy and be the best sandwich that you can be.”

During the 45-minute program, which also featured the Jackson Heights band and choir, Superintendent Adrianne Walsh listed some of the many accomplishments of the Class of 2015, which included awards and honors in band, athletics, student leadership, FFA, forensics and art.

“They’ve set a high bar for classes that will follow them,” Walsh said.

Walsh noted that every member of the graduating class participated in some form of extracurricular activity during their high school career, which Walsh said is a first since she began working in the district.

“It speaks well of the class’ leadership, diversity and contributions to our school,” she said.

Walsh noted that members of the class have received $11,500 in college scholarships. Nine plan to attend four-year universities, 10 will attend a two-year college, six will attend a technical school and five will head to the workforce.

Before receiving their diplomas, Patterson gave his fellow classmates one last bit of encouragement.

“Class of 2015, good luck in all your future endeavors,” he said. “I know you will all do great things and as you move on to the next chapter in your life, remember where it all started.”
