Fire destroys home near Hoyt
A home at 17072 98th Rd. in southern Jackson County is being considered a “complete loss” after it was damaged in a fire Wednesday, March 16, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse. The home was not occupied when the fire started.
Shortly before noon that day, the sheriff’s office received a report of a structure fire at the residence. Fire departments from Hoyt, Mayetta, Soldier Township and the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation responded to the scene.
Jackson County EMS and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
The entire home, as well as a vehicle, were destroyed, it was reported.
The man who lived at the home was nearby cutting wood when the fire started, it was reported, and his wife was at work. Another person reported the fire, it was noted.
Morse said the cause of the fire is currently undetermined but is being investigated by the Kansas Fire Marshal’s Office and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
According to county records, the property is owned by James and Rebecca Galbraith, and the 2015 appraised value of the home was $90,400.
