Crop duster pilot walks away from Friday crash
A crop-duster pilot walked away from a crash around noon on Friday just two miles east of Emmett.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Curt Robert Strathman, 28, Axtell, was flying a 1986 Grumman G-164A west near 142nd and A Roads when the plane lost altitude, struck the ground and then flipped onto its top into some timber.
Strathman was able to free himself from the wreckage and was the only person in the plane during the time of the crash. He was treated by Pottawatomie County EMS and then was transported to St. Marys Hospital for treatment of injuries, according to KHP.
Strathman was working on behalf of Nemaha County Co-op and was believed to have been applying chemicals to a cornfield east of the crash site, it was reported.
Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse said that witnesses saw the plane go down and heard the crash.
Fire officials from Emmett and Hoyt, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and KHP responded to the scene.
The KHP headed up the investigation into the crash before turning it over to the Federal Aviation Administration.
