Community Christmas Dinner slated for this Friday

With only days to go before this year’s Community Christmas Dinner, set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the EUM Family Life Center, dinner organizers are seeking donations of a few more food items — particularly one that was popular at this year’s Thanksgiving dinner.

“I haven’t gotten any of the sweet potatoes,” said dinner organizer Freda Galer, who noted that six gallons of sweet potatoes are being sought for Friday’s dinner. “I’ve got all of the other vegetables, but none of those.”

The Community Christmas Dinner, an annual event in Holton, is one that is open to everyone, and Galer said donations of food, time and money to cover expenses are appreciated.

Other food items needed for Friday’s dinner include 10 Jell-O salads, nine fruit or vegetable salads, 14 pies and nine cakes. Servers and delivery drivers are also needed for the dinner, Galer said.

“Everything else is taken care of,” she added.

The Christmas dinner was moved to the EUM Family Life Center, located near the intersection of Third Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Holton, in recent years due to the event outgrowing its previous home at St. Dominic’s Parish Hall. Galer said the move was a smart one due to the dinners attracting more people each year.

“We’re hoping for 450,” Galer said. “We had more than 400 last year. The crowds are getting bigger, which is good.”

Galer reminded those who want a Christmas dinner delivered to them to call her at 364-4160 by 10 a.m. on Thursday. She may also be reached at that same number for those who wish to make a food donation or pledge volunteer services for the Christmas dinner before that time.

Monetary donations are still being accepted to help cover costs of the Christmas dinner, it was reported. Contact Francis DeVader at 364-2507 for more information.
