Candidate "meet and greet" planned
Area residents are invited to meet with candidates running for county, state and national offices during an informal event being planned for 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 22, in Holton.
The “Meet The Candidates” event will be held at the Jackson County Courthouse meeting room, which is located on the first floor of the Courthouse.
Invitations to candidates were sent out last week, and so far, 10 candidates have announced they will attend.
Those candidates who plan to attend include:
* Democrat Patrick Wiesner of Lawrence, who is seeking the U.S. Senate seat.
* Democrat Britani Potter of Ottawa, who is running for U.S. House of Representatives District 2.
* Republican Dennis Pyle of Hiawatha, who is seeking re-election to the Kansas Senate representing the First District.
* Democrat Lauren Van Wagoner of Hoyt, who is seeking election to the 61st District seat on the Kansas House of Representatives.
* Republican Francis Awerkamp of St. Marys, who is running for the 61st District seat on the Kansas House of Representatives.
* Democrat Tim Morse of Holton, who is seeking re-election as county sheriff.
* Republican Bob McNicholas of Netawaka, who is also seeking the county sheriff’s seat.
* Republican Janet Zwonitzer of Holton, who is seeking re-election to the Second District seat on the Jackson County Commission.
* Ed Lutz of Holton, who is running for the Second District seat on the Jackson County Commission. Lutz is running as an Independent.
* Democrat Bill Elmer of Hoyt, who is seeking re-election to the Third District seat on the Jackson County Commission.
Current U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (Republican) and Jackson County Register of Deeds Tammy Moulden (Democrat) have both responded that they will be unable to attend the event due to prior commitments.
Members of the public will be able to meet and interact with all the candidates and individually ask them questions. Candidates will be allowed to distribute campaign information at the event. Refreshments will also be served.
The public event is being organized by The Holton Recorder, The Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and courthouse staff.
