'Barns of Muddy Creek' focus of sixth County Barn Tour

The Jackson County Historical Society is hosting its sixth annual Barn Tour this fall.

The tour will be held on both Sept. 24 and Oct. 1 and will feature “The Barns of Muddy Creek.”

The tour group will leave at 8:30 a.m. both days from the Royal Valley High School parking lot in Hoyt and return at 3 p.m., it was reported.

The guided school bus tour will travel down scenic country roads in and around the three branches of Muddy Creek near Hoyt. The event will include listening to personal stories from barn owners, viewing unique architectural barn designs and enjoying local entertainment.

The tour will include “working” barns and historic barns, as well as stories about the first white settlers arriving here in 1855 (before Kansas became a state), their log cabins and the stone quarries in the area, organizers reported.

Tickets are $50 apiece if they are purchased by Aug. 31 and $55 if they are purchased after that date. Lunch of hot roast beef with all the trimmings and dessert will be provided by Donna’s Cakes and Catering.

Refreshments will be served throughout the day, and photography is allowed on the tour.

Last year’s barn tour featured 12 barns located east of Holton and near Larkinburg.

This is the final planned barn tour that the Jackson County Historical Society is organizing at this time, it was reported. A historic tour will be held next year, however, featuring “Hidden Treasures of Jackson County,” which will include cemeteries, schools, some barns and other historic “treasures” in the Delia area, it was reported.
