Art walk is Saturday
More than 60 local, regional and national artists and musicians will be featured here during the Jackson County Art Walk on Saturday, Aug. 8.
Sponsored by Jackson County Arts, the art walk will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at more than 30 designated businesses and locations around the Holton Square.
Holton resident Marty Mavrovich has been selected as the featured artist for the art walk, and she will exhibit acrylic, pastel and watercolor paintings at Homestead Affordable Housing.
“For me, art is a meditation. I just open up to my subject and the artwork just emerges,” Mavrovich said.
Mavrovich will display paintings of Alaskan landscapes and animals that were inspired by an Alaskan cruise last summer.
She received a bachelor of fine arts from The University of Kansas and studied under Barbara Waterman Peters at Washburn University. She is a founding member of The Collective Gallery in Topeka and exhibited there for several years.
Currently, Mavrovich teaches at Sarah’s Enchanted Cottage in Holton. In the past, she taught for the Shawnee North Community Center and for Highland Community College at Meriden.
Twenty-one chairs painted with colorful designs will be placed around the Square during the art walk as part of “Art in the County Seat: A Chair to Remember.” The painted chairs were created by area artists, families, businesses and organizations. Those attending the art walk are encouraged to take a seat and listen to the music.
At the Jackson County Courthouse, the Rod Durst Family Band Future Generations will perform bluegrass and western music from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Jackson County Arts members will exhibit their art and quilt art paintings in the building alongside artwork by Sandy Studebaker-Gilbert’s students (ages 8 to 88). Refreshments will be available.
On the Courthouse lawn, Ethan Fund and Aidan Allen will sing and play the piano.

West Side of Square
Jackson County Museum – Oil paintings and other pieces by the late Robert Sudlow. A native of Holton, Sudlow was named the first Kansas Governor’s Artist and taught at The University of Kansas from 1962 to 1987.
J&M Sewing Center – Cross stitch pieces by Danica Haverkamp.
Hutchins Building – Woodcarvings and repurposed musical instruments by Derek Knable, oil paintings, a printmaking block and photography by Shelby Erickson and oil paintings of wildlife by Cindy Martin.
Martin is best known for her murals in various churches and businesses in Kansas, as well as the silo at Wamego, which depicts scenes along the Oregon Trail.
Penny’s – Oil paintings by Rhett Totten and banjo music by Vance Lassey.
Sarah’s Enchanted Cottage – Mixed media and watercolor paintings by Sarah Devader and jewelry and fiber art by Peggy Bass.

Off the Square

Maps listing all the artists and musicians and their locations will also be available at the Courthouse, Hutchins Building and local businesses that day.
During the event, school supplies will be collected for the Tools 4 School program, which collects and distributes school supplies to low-income families. Look for the designated collection box on the Square.
The Jackson Heights High School Student Council will also be selling water, hot dogs, chips and cookies as a fund-raiser on Saturday.
