WHS, ACCHS runners wrap up fall season at state meet

Wetmore cross country wrapped up the 2015 season by taking all of its boys and girls to the Class 1A state meet in Wamego this past weekend and holding its own amongst some tough competition.

Aaron Achten was the only individual runner to claim a state medal, taking fifth in the boys race, but the Cardinals still managed some impressive team showings as well.

The boys came closest to capturing a state trophy, finishing sixth as a team, while the girls ended up placing ninth. McKayla Henry paced the Lady Cardinals, finishing 40th overall in the 1A girls race.

Football competition for 2015 also came to an end recently for Wetmore and ACCHS, with the re-formed Cardinals squad closing the fall out against Southern Coffey County last Thursday.

Wetmore fell in a hole early and while the team closed out the game with a touchdown in each of the final three quarters, it wasn’t quite enough in an eventual 38-24 loss.

Big plays early allowed Southern Coffey County to jump out to a 22-0 lead in the first quarter and while Garrett Evans finished the night with three touchdowns and 148 rushing yards on 38 carries, it came too late for the Cardinals, though coach Rick Schnacker said he was pleased with how his team closed out the game.

“We played a much better second half. I am proud of our effort the second half. We played hard and fought back but fell short. These boys have much to be proud of,” Schnacker said.

Wetmore finished the season 2-5 combined in JV and varsity games.

Atchison County also ended its season with a tough road test, as the Tigers fell to the Rams of Pleasant Ridge 52-22 in the district finale. ACCHS finished the 2015 campaign 3-6 overall.
