Lady Cats struggle to keep pace with Blue Jays

For the second time this season, the Holton High School girls varsity basketball team found itself unable to keep pace with the Sabetha High School Blue Jays, but the margin of loss was not as large as it was back in December.

Sabetha won Friday’s match against the Lady Cats by a 59-41 score, which Head Coach Jon Holliday said was a better margin than the 53-23 loss Holton suffered on the road at Sabetha earlier in the season.

“It was kind of a back-and forth game,” Holliday said of Friday’s contest.

The Blue Jays started the game with a 16-9 first quarter run and padded the lead by another five points, going into halftime with a 31-19 lead.

“They got started early,” Holliday said of the Blue Jays. “They had a couple of four or six-point spurts, and we did our best to come back. The problem was, we'd get a four-point spurt and they'd get a six-point spurt, and we'd lose the round.”

The Lady Cats battled back in the third quarter, scoring early and outshooting the Jays by a 15-13 margin. But the Jays proved too much for the Cats to handle and took the fourth quarter 15-7.

“They took it back over,” Holliday said of Sabetha’s fourth-quarter run. “We just had some offensive rebounds that we gave up to them, and we put them on the foul line a few times that we shouldn’t have.”

Sophomore Shay Tanking led the Lady Cats in scoring with 12 overall points, including three from behind the 3-point arc. Junior Ashlyn Weilert and sophomore Sarah Lierz each contributed seven points, with the latter adding a successful three-point shot to the total.

The Lady Cats will go up against Perry-Lecompton at home on Tuesday, looking to get their second win of the season over the Kaws. The day’s games begin at 4:30 p.m.
