Jackson Heights' Aidan Allen (shown above, left) runs her leg of the 4x800m relay in a meet earlier this season. Allen and a number of Cobra athletes helped the team have a strong performance in Onaga last Friday and gain some momentum heading into the championship stretch.

Cobra track athletes have successful outing in final regular season meet

In its final meet of the regular season, the Jackson Heights track team went out with a bang as both the boys and girls finished runner-up in the team standings at the Onaga Invitational on Friday.

The Cobras saw plenty of individual highlights as well, with nine athletes turning in gold medal performances and a number of personal records being recorded at the same time.

One of the biggest leaps forward by any athlete was that of Korby Strube in the long jump, as he set a personal best with a jump of 18’ 9 ½” to win the event. The performance was all the more critical with Wyatt Olberding sitting the meet out to recover from a leg injury.

Abby Williams also performed well in the jumping events on the girls side, Alley noted, while the boys relay teams turned in some strong performances, too.

In regards to the relays, Alley noted Seth Holliday and Westin Jacobsen were added to the roster for the 4x800m relay in Onaga to prep for the league meet this week and also to help the team keep improving.

“We kind of want the Onaga meet as our league meet line-up and we’re trying to maximize as many points as we can from the better runners that we have,” JH coach Lyle Alley said.

Jacobsen and Holliday held their own in multiple events, helping the championship relay teams along with Dalton Chartier, Braden Dohl and Mason Hamilton, while Wyatt Roles (boys shot put), Peter Rupnicki (boys 100m dash) and Hanna Davault (girls 3200m run) all also claimed individual titles.

Those performances are highlighting some increasing consistency for the team, which Alley said is key since the athletes are basically done experimenting and now it is time to put their best foot forward with the upcoming championship stretch.

“Right now, for the league meet and for Friday’s meet, I think we got the right pieces of the puzzle put together and we just hope that on Thursday they all come out and have their best performances of the year,” Alley said. “Hopefully we continue to build on that and have a good stretch run here.”

Jackson Heights will start the chain of championship meets at the Northeast Kansas League track meet in Winchester on Thursday starting at 3 p.m.
