State capitol visit is inspiring

If you have the opportunity to travel to Topeka during the current Legislative Session, visit the State Capitol Building and observe our state leaders at work.

If you are what they call “retired,’’ and have some leisure time, you should definitely visit the State Capitol during the Legislative Session. It is very entertaining.

On Thursday of last week, I visited the State Capitol. It was Kansas Media Day there and more than 60 newspaper and other media people from all across the state converged for a day of visiting in person with state representative and state senators, in between their committee meetings.

In the morning, we watched from the balcony area in the beautiful and historic House Chamber as the House members voted on the controversial measure to “realign’’ (reduce) the number of school districts in the state by more than 50 percent. That measure failed.

We also heard testimony on the House floor about a measure to hold harmless any underage drinker in the state who calls for emergency services to help another person in need of emergency care due to alcohol or drug poisoning.

The media group provided a sandwich, brown-bag, type lunch for members of the House of Representatives, and I was happy to spend part of the lunchtime with Rep. Becky Hutchins, R-Holton.

All Kansans are welcome at the State Capitol to watch our state leaders at work. The State Capitol is the People’s House but I was a little shocked to not see more Kansans there on Thursday.

Every Kansan should visit the State Capitol during the Legislative Session, at least once in their life, to see where and how our state laws are made.
