Warren Wahweotten 1944-2018
Warren A. Wahweotten, Sr, “Nayaksi,” 74, of Mayetta, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2018, at his home.
He was born Feb. 3, 1944, in Holton, the son of Albert “Wylie” Wahweotten and Isabelle Nioce.
Mr. Wahweotten worked for Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence for 26 years before retiring in 1993. After that, he worked for the Fire Keepers Elder Center on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation for 23 years.
He was a member of the tribal drum religion and a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.
He married Wynona L. Harrison on Jan. 10, 1964, in Holton. She survives.
Other survivors include a brother, Vernon Wahweotten, Holton; a sister, Linda Wahweotten, Mayetta; two sons, Michael A. Wahweotten, Lawrence, and Warren “Junior” Wahweotten and wife Gina, Mayetta; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tamara L. Wahweotten and a grandson, Timothy Warren Wahweotten.
Indian drum services will be held Friday evening at the Danceground Building on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation. Burial will be held Saturday in Shipshee Cemetery. Mr. Wahweotten will lie in state Thursday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt where family and friends will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
