Virgil Walker 1971-2021

Virgil Stacey “S’ewēp” Walker Jr., 49, Lawrence, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2021 at his home with family by his side. He was born Nov. 25, 1971 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Virgil Walker Sr. and Cherie Johnson.

Mr. Walker was raised on the Prairie Band Reservation by his Misho, Garnett David Potts, and Koko, Virginia Pushetonequa Potts.

He worked for Highland Construction in Lawrence. He was a member of the Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa, belonging to the Meskwaki Tribe. He was also a member of the Native American Religion.

He married Evelyn Coho in April 1997 in Lawrence. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his daughter, Tyra Walker, Lawrence; mother, Cherie “Betiko” Walker, Tama, Iowa; two step-sons, Drew Frazier and Tilman Frazier, both of Independence, Mo.; six sisters, Alice Beem of Mayetta, Rosan Potts of Mayetta, Virgene Smith of Des Moines, Iowa, Oshpuk Hubbard of Lawrence, Arian Johnson-Milton of Des Moines, Iowa and Kristine Johnson-Ivory (Vincent) of Perry, Iowa and four brothers, Benny Joseph Potts of Mayetta, Richard Horton (Amy), in Minnesota, Roger Walker (Molly), Tama, Iowa and Jim Potts, Mayetta.

He was preceded in death by Misho, Garnett David Potts; Koko, Virginia Pushetonequa; father, Virgil Walker Sr.; Koko, Carol Keahna; Medo, John Johnson Sr.; sister, Evelyn Hopkins; and brother, B.J. Potts.

Wake and Ttibekwe were held Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 31, 2021 at Potts Homeplace (13862 O. Rd., Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation). Burial was held Wednesday morning at Potts Cemetery. Mercer Funeral Home in Holton is in charge of arrangements.
