Tom Shupe 1939-2021

Thomas W. “Tom” Shupe, 81, of Holton, passed away Friday, Sept. 3, 2021 at Community Health Systems in Onaga. He was born Dec. 14, 1939 in Topeka, the son of Cyrus Joyce and Ruth (Linge) Shupe.

Tom graduated from Topeka High School in 1957. He attended Washburn University. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1957-1965 during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. Tom lived in the Holton community since 1961, serving two terms as Mayor 1968-1969 and 1971-1972.

Tom owned and operated the City Hotel from 1961-1976, co-owned Adkins & Shupe Insurance and worked for the State of Kansas Insurance Department.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of Holton Lions Club and Holton Country Club.

Tom married Joyce Cowan on Aug. 5, 1961 in Topeka, they celebrated more than 60 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce, of the home; son, David Shupe (Kerrey), of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; three grandchildren, Logan Poole (Zach) of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Landon Shupe (Emily) of Charlotte, N.C. and Bailey Stuart (Braden) of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; and two great-grandchildren, Collins Poole and McQuady Stuart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cyrus and Ruth Shupe, and an infant daughter, Susan Shupe.

Tom will lie in state beginning Sunday afternoon, Sept. 5, 2021 through Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021 until 6:30 p.m. at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Private family funeral will be Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021 with burial to follow at Holton Cemetery.
