Ruth Smith 1925-2015
Ruth Ilene Smith, 89, Whiting, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2015, at the Mission Village Living Center in Horton.
She was born Dec. 19, 1925, in Atchison County, the daughter of William and Elsie Chain Lockwood.
Mrs. Smith worked as a bookkeeper for Duckwalls, sold Avon products, wrote Whiting news for area newspapers and helped her husband on the family farm.
She was a member of Whiting United Methodist Church and the Netawaka Saddle Club and was a former 4-H leader.
She married Warren Smith on Jan. 19, 1947, in Holton. He died July 2, 2009.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Schaefer and husband Mike, Topeka, and Rhonda Cormier and husband Bruce, Soldier; two sons, Stanley Smith and wife Di, Red Oak, Iowa, and Dennis Smith and wife Pam, Whiting; a sister, Helen Diebolt, Atchison; 10 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, where family will greet friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be held in Horton Cemetery.
