Russell Baxter 1942-2017

 

Russell Eugene Baxter, 74, Mayetta, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, at his home.

He was born Oct. 3, 1942, in Holton, the son of Lawrence and Lillie Beth Ray Baxter. He graduated in 1960 from Mayetta High School.

Mr. Baxter served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1965 during the Vietnam War era, and he served for a year and seven months with USARPAC. He worked his early years at Whelan’s in Topeka and later for many years at Dupont and Frito Lay, both in Topeka. He re­tired from Fed Ex in Topeka, which was formerly known as Watkins Delivery. He also was a lifetime farmer and rancher.

He was a member of Mayetta Christian Church, Holton American Legion Post 44, Holton VFW Post 1367 and Mayetta Cutting Horse Club.

He married Gladys Cato in Janu­ary 1966 in Georgia. They divorced in 1980. He married Marquita Buckmeier on March 7, 1990, in Las Vegas, Nev. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Gary Baxter and wife Amber, Mayetta; a daughter, Dana Harris and husband Chris, Mayetta; two stepsons, Tom Miller and wife Glenda, Topeka, and Michael Hoog and wife Jen, Ishpeming, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Colby Harris, on July 21, 2017; and a brother, Ronald Baxter, on May 31, 2011.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial with mili­tary honors will follow in Denison Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
