Roy Porter 1940-2019

Roy Everett Porter, 79, of Holton, passed away Thursday, Oct. 31, 2019, at a Topeka hospital.

He was born May 26, 1940, in Wetmore, the son of Paul Marion and Ruby “Hazel” George Porter.

Roy grew up in the Wetmore community and graduated from Wetmore High School in 1958. He had lived in Jackson County since 1983. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve. Roy worked as a mechanic for Santa Fe Railroad for 33 years, retiring in 1993. He later worked as custodian at Jackson Heights Grade School and enjoyed being around the kids.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Holton. Roy loved to hunt and fish and volunteered to help teach Hunter’s Safety. He also coached baseball and enjoyed cutting firewood.

Roy married Donna Lee Klahr on July 16, 1961, in Netawaka. She survives.

He is also survived by his daughter, Janet Lenard (Lewis) of Burlington; his sons, Paul Porter (Nancy Jo) of Holton and Darin Porter (Joyce) of Independence; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Evelyn Lierz.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Holton. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Wetmore Cemetery. There will be a book available to sign at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
