Ross Nelson 1926-2017

 

Ross M. Nelson, 91, Holton, died Friday, March 24, 2017, at The Pines in Holton.

He was born Jan. 17, 1926, in Circleville, the son of Guy and Dorothy Beightel Nelson near Cir­cleville. He graduated from Cir­cleville High School in 1943 and later attended Kansas State Univer­sity, graduating in 1957 with an agricultural degree.

Mr. Nelson served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War. Prior to the war, he farmed with his brother and worked for several years in Washington, D.C. He later worked for the Extension Service for 30years working in Shawnee, Franklin, Washington, Logan and Ellis counties. After retiring in 1987, he returned to Holton and worked part-time as the Emergency Management Co-Coordinator for six years.

He was a life member of Holton VFW Post 1367, Holton American Legion Post 44, a NARFE member, a 50-year member of Circleville Masonic Lodge Post 20, a life member of National Association of County Ag Agents and a K-State Foundation member.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; a daughter, Deliece Hofen and husband Brian; two sons, Shawn Nelson and wife Jane and Dennis Nelson and wife Beverly; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Loretta; a brother, Scott; a sister, Roberta; a granddaughter, Miranda; his parents; and other family members.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Private family burial will follow in Holton Cemetery.
