Robert Shopteese 1935-2021

Robert “Shuckahosee” Larue Shopteese, 86, of Mayetta, passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 2021, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.

He was born Jan. 31, 1935, the son of King P. and Mary “Mae” Ruth (Williams) Shopteese. Robert attended Marty Catholic Boarding School in Marty, S.D.

Robert worked as an engine mechanic for Santa Fe and the Union Pacific Railroad for more than 35 years. Robert was a lifelong mechanic and outside of work he enjoyed working on dirt stock racing cars with the good ole boys in the Midwest.

He served in the United States Navy as a mechanic on the USS Hector during the Korean War from 1952 to 1960 and was honorably discharged.

Robert was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and the American Legion WE-TA-SE Post #410.

Survivors include a daughter, Vena Rodriguez of Long Beach, Calif.; two sons, Raymond May of Everett, Wash., and Toney May (Holly) of Des Moines, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary; sister, Shirley Munoz; and John Toney Shopteese.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11 at Our Lady of Snows Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Shipshee Cemetery on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation with military honors. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton with a rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m.
