Richard Shove 1924-2017
Richard Shove, 93, of Holton, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at his home with his wife by his side.
He was born Jan. 13, 1924, in Havensville, the son of Paul and Mary (Gibson) Shove.
Richard graduated from Havensville High School in 1942 and attended a semester at Washburn University. Richard served for a few months in the United States Navy during World War II. He later graduated with honors from College of Mortuary Science at St. Louis in 1946.
After he was licensed as a funeral director and embalmer, he started his career at Tessendorf Funeral Home in Onaga, Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego and worked for more than 60 years with Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Richard was a loving husband.
Richard was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Holton and Holton Chamber of Commerce. He was a life-long member of Holton Lions Club, Holton Masonic Lodge 42 AF&AM and Holton American Legion Post 44. Richard also was a former Holton Fire Marshal and served as President of the Kansas State Board of Mortuary Arts in 1971.
He married Margie M. Lister on April 28, 1944, in Liberty, Mo. She preceded him in death on Dec. 24, 1989. He married Marlene J. Asher on June 15, 1990, in Holton. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a stepson, Matt Asher of Holton; a sister-in-law, Murrel Ryan of Lake Wabaunsee; two nieces, Natalie Poorman (Tom) and Kitsy Maynor (Pete); and two nephews, Craig Shove (Jeannie) and Mike Shove. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Shove; a brother, Winston Shove; and a twin brother, Robert Shove.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 22 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Family will greet friends from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Holton Cemetery.
