Richard Flanders 1934-2022

Richard Lee Flanders, 88, Topeka, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2022, at Tanglewood Health and Rehabilitation.

He was born July 5, 1934, in Jackson County, the son of Clarence A. and Maye Scheidegger Flanders. He attended Holton High School and later earned his GED.

Mr. Flanders served in the U.S. Navy, working as a boiler operator helper and earning the Rank of BT3. After the Navy, he was a bus driver in Wichita for four years, a carpenter in California for more than 20 years and a courier for 1st American Title Company, retiring in 1997.

He married Shirley J. Sharrai on Nov. 25, 1953, in Siloam Springs, Ark. She died Aug. 17, 2018. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, John, Raymond, George and Paul Flanders.

Survivors include four children, Richard D. Flanders and wife Sun, Abilene, Texas, Terry L. Flanders, Topeka, Cheryl A. Anderson and husband Michael, Redding, Calif., and Mark D. Flanders and wife Sheila, Texas City, Texas; a brother, Kenneth Flanders and wife Virginia, Haysville; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in Olive Hill Cemetery. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time.
