Phyllis Lewis (1927-2022)

Phyllis Mae Lewis, 95, Onaga, died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022 at the Onaga Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Oct. 1, 1927 at Bancroft, the daughter of Joseph Ernest and Evelyn Marie Richmond Porter. She graduated from Onaga High School in 1945.

Mrs. Lewis worked in several different cafes, the Slimaker Dress Factory and had cooked at the Onaga school for 22 years.

She was a member of the First Congregational UCC in Onaga.

She married John H. Lewis on May 29, 1946 in Topeka. He died Oct. 17, 2007.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a stepfather, Bert Handley; a half-brother, Dale “Tex” Handley; a half-sister, Judy Spurlock; a stepbrother, Clarence “Bud” Handley; and two stepsisters, Gladys Gillenwater and Lucile Armstrong.

Survivors include a son, Bob Lewis and wife Pam, Frisco, Texas; a half-brother, Melvin “Tobe” Handley, Onaga; and one grandson, Chris Lewis, his wife, Julie, and their children, Brady John, Austin Christopher and Sydney Paige Lewis, of Lewisville, Texas.

Calling hours will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga. Private family burial will be held in the Onaga Cemetery.
