Patrick Sheern 1940-2021

Patrick Sheern, 80, Garnett, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2021, at his home.

He was born Oct. 23, 1940, in Garnett, the son of Ralph Sr. and Rose Clauser Sheern. He graduated from Garnett High School in 1958 and attended Emporia State University, receiving a degree in special education.

Mr. Sheern served in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1965 and was stationed on the USS Hornet as an electrician. He later was a secondary special education teacher, starting in Marysville and moving back to Garnett in 1973. He later started the special education program at Prairie View High School, where he was active in Special Olympics. He moved in 1982 to Parsons, serving as principal of the Parsons State Hospital Alternative School and as administrator at the Fairfield Alternative Program in Chanute.

He married Margaret Schiffelbein on Aug. 25, 1962. They later divorced.

Survivors include his children, Diane Keeler, Garnett, and Danny Sheern and wife Lyn, Topeka; five grandchildren, Janae Nilges and husband Greg and Brant Morris and wife Karlyn, all of Whiting, and Brock Sheern, Bryan Sheern and wife Kate and Ashley Sheern, all of Topeka; two great-grandchildren, Kessley Nilges and Jaxon Sheern; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Timothy Sheern; four siblings, Ralph Sheern Jr., Gene Sheern, Marilyn Powelson and Rosalee Myers; a sister-in-law, Martha Sheern; a brother-in-law, John Powelson; two nephews, Mark Powelson and Thomas Powelson; and a niece, Christina Sheern.

Funeral services were held Monday at Feuerborn Family Service Chapel in Garnett. Burial followed in Holy Angels Cemetery in Garnett.
