After their marriage they joined his parents in the dairy business and built their life together on the family farm south of Valley Falls. He retired from the dairy business in 1990 and he went to work for the Jefferson County Road and Bridge Department as a road grader operator. He retired from the county in 2002.

Norman enjoyed visiting with people about farm life, family and the history of Valley Falls. He served on several boards and committees including the Sunflower Dairy Co-Op, Mid-America Dairymen, the Rock Creek Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ACS) and Rural Water District 3.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lucille Smith; and two brothers, Raymond Smith and Donald Smith (infant).
