Mike Hawley 1946-2022

Mike Hawley of St Charles, Ill., and former resident of Shawnee, passed away Aug. 11, 2022, at Silverado Memory Care, after battling Alzheimer’s and dementia for many years. He was 75.

He was born Sept. 1, 1946, in Seneca, son of Lawrence E “Gene” Hawley and Eileen M. (nee Woods) Hawley. He was a graduate of Circleville High School, and later after military service, including a tour in Vietnam, Wichita State University. With a business degree, he would later earn a MBA from Rockhurst University.

He is survived by his sister, Jean Zwonitzer (Gary Zwonitzer), Columbia, Mo., and his brother, Bob Hawley (Joy Harris-Hawley), Rochelle, Ill. He is also survived by two children, Lora Hawley, N.C., and Allison Hawley Brown, in Florida.

He was a longtime employee of United Telephone, which would later become Sprint Telephone. After employment there he worked in cost accounting for the General Accounting Office (GAO), from which he retired in 2015.

A great lover of history and the outdoors, he was often the one who would correctly identify the historic event and pursue a lively game of cards. Long walks in the park outdoors were also of great interest. He was always a voracious reader of history and non-fiction novels.

The family will have a private ceremony, and Mike requested any charitable contributions be made to the JCPRD-Johnson County Park Recreation Department. In honor of his love of the outdoors, there will be a memorial bench in Knights of Columbus Park in Shawnee.
