Merril Lovendahl 1938-2022
Carl Merril Lovendahl, 84, of rural Meriden, passed away after an extended illness on July 22, 2022.
He was born on April 26, 1938, in Concordia, to Carl Rufus and Ada Elvira (Lundgren) Lovendahl. He spent his early years on a farm near Clyde.
The Lovendahls moved to rural Meriden in 1950. Merril graduated from Meriden High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1956 to 1962.
He married Karen Sylvia Keck on July 16, 1960, at Topeka. They recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary.
Merril was a farmer. He also worked for Goodyear as a tire builder for 40 years, where he earned the nickname “Swede.”
Merril was a member of Rock Creek Bible Church, Meriden Antique Engine and Threshers Association and the Muddy Creek Cemetery Board. He and Karen travelled to many polka dances and he was an avid baseball fan. As a young man, Merril played catcher for his local baseball team. He later got to coach his son Derril, also a catcher, on teams in Hoyt and Topeka.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Carl Derril Lovendahl in 1983 and infant great-grandson Isaac Kirk in 2004.
He is survived by his wife, Karen, and daughters and their spouses Kerril and David Bauerly, rural Tonganoxie, and Daren and Randy Penry, rural Topeka. Also, seven grandchildren: Stephanie Green, Eric Kirk, Alan Bauerly, Christopher Kirk, Casey Penry, Cody Penry and Dustan Sprowls; 14 great-grandchildren; and his herd of Hereford cattle.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 29 at Rock Creek Bible Church, with visitation time one hour prior. Burial will be held in Muddy Creek Cemetery following the services.
