Max Swartz 1929-2015
Services for Max L. Swartz, 85, veterinarian, cattleman, loyal Sulphur Bulldog and KSU Wildcat fan, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19 at St. Francis Xavier, Sulphur, Okla., with Father Billy Lewis officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of DeArman’s Clagg Funeral Home.
Max was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Soldier, to F.H. and Nola (Glasscock) Swartz. He married Kathleen Craig in Philadelphia, Pa., on July 2, 1955. He passed away at his home on Saturday, March 14, 2015.
He graduated from Soldier High School in 1947 and received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University in 1953.
Shortly after his military service overseas in the United States Air Force, he began his lifelong practice of veterinary medicine. For 50 years Max served the community of Sulphur, Okla., and surrounding areas, utilizing a helicopter to reach his rural clients in his mixed animal practice.
Dr. Swartz was a lifelong member of the AVMA and OVMA. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church since 1955.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Kathleen Swartz; children, Marinell Degenhardt and husband Gary of Kingwood, Texas, Kevin Swartz and wife Amy of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Andrew Swartz and wife Shaun, Sulphur, Okla., Claudia Johnson and husband Larry of Westfield, Ind., and Matt Swartz and wife Erin of Flower Mound, Texas; grandchildren Jessica Williams, Rachel Degenhardt, Deidre Goodhue, Drew Swartz, Eva Degenhardt, Alex Swartz, Logan Johnson, Zac Swartz, Shannon Swartz, Ben Swartz, Joe Johnson, Sloan Swartz and Dalton Swartz; and great-grandchildren Asten Goodhue, McCoy Williams and McKinley Williams.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald Swartz, and granddaughter Sarah Elizabeth Swartz.
Pallbearers were Drew Swartz, Alex Swartz, Zac Swartz, Ben Swartz, Logan Johnson, Joe Johnson, Sloan Swartz, Dalton Swartz and Colt Williams.
