Marjorie Venneberg 1927-2015
Marjorie F. Venneberg, 87, Onaga, died Friday, Oct. 9, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.
She was born Dec. 29, 1927, near Havensville, the daughter of John Scott and Vernice Zella Gibson Manuel. She attended Harrison Grade School in Jackson County and graduated from Havensville High School in 1945.
Marjorie taught school for five years before her marriage and later was a Teacher’s Aide at Havensville Grade School for nineteen years.
She was a member of Buck’s Grove United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the quilting group at the church. She held many offices at church and in the Women’s Society, as well as serving as a lay speaker. She had been a volunteer 4-H Leader, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher’s Sorority and was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star.
She married Lloyd A. Venneberg on July 30, 1950, at Buck’s Grove United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 2006. They celebrated 55 years of marriage on the family farm as the third generation to live and work there. She loved being a wife, mother and homemaker.
Marjorie was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Geneva Watts.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Ann Mattke (Frank), Andover; two sons, Robert Scott Venneberg (Jean) and Frederick Venneberg (Angela), all of Onaga; seven grandchildren, Kelly Hight (B.J.), Scott Venneberg (Jessica), Brent Mattke (Jessi), Ryan Mattke (Amber), Jared Mattke (Elizabeth), Jessica Venneberg (Jeremiah Ivy) and Ashley Venneberg, and 12 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Marjorie’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13 at Buck’s Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Marjorie will lie in state Monday and until 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga, where family and friends will meet from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday.
