Madene Fernkopf 1929-2023

Madene Fernkopf, 93, of Holton, passed away, Friday, Feb. 3, 2023 at Medicaloges Jackson County. She was born June 22, 1929 in Whiting, the daughter of Herman and Lura Ethel (Whittle) George.

Madene graduated from Wetmore High School in 1947. She was a wife, mom, grandma and homemaker most of her life. Madene was a 30 plus years Avon Representative.

She was a member of the Holton Evangel Church teaching Sunday School for more than 20 years, a member of OES for more than 50 years and former member of Holton Business Women.

Madene married Eugene Max Fernkopf on Dec. 25, 1948 in Elkhart; they celebrated more than 59 years of marriage before his passing on April 28, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Lura George; five sisters, Hazel Porter, Marjorie McDaniel, Jean Hallin, Lucille Kirk and Joan George; and three brothers, Ray, Ross and Vernon George.

Survivors include her two sons, Robert Fernkopf (Robin) of Holton and Steven Fernkopf (Robyn) of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Ludema Scott of Harrodsburg, Ky.; a brother, Dwane George of Basehor; two granddaughters, Emily Caudle (Tyler) and Lura Goff (Dustin), both of Holton; and five great-grandchildren, Jaelyn, Ian, Beau, Jax and Cullen.

Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023 at the Holton Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
