Leslie "Chick" Hale 1943-2018

Leslie “Chick” Hale “Wag Gesh G’Muk,” 75, Hiawatha, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018, at Hi­awatha Community Hospital.

He was born July 11, 1943, in Topeka, the son of Jessie William Hale and Alfredia Williams Hale. He graduated from Whiting High School.

Mr. Hale served in the U.S. Army with an honorable discharge in 1965.

He served as tribal chairman for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.

He married Bertha Mijessepe. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Sherry Hale, Sabetha, Corinna Hale-Ross and husband Joseph Sr., Lawrence, and Voneen Hale, Lawrence; two sons, Jeremy Hale, Hiawatha, and Solon Jessepe, Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Marilyn Wakolee, Mayetta, and Arnetta Hale, Topeka; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a twin brother, Weslie Hale; a brother, Jessie “Bonce” Hale; a daughter, Geneva Jo Hale; and a grandson Jorden Rylee Hale.

Drum services will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Kickapoo Community Building. Burial will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 16 at Kennekuk Cemetery on the Kickapoo Reservation. Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary of Horton is in charge of arrangements.
