Leatrice Noriega 1946-2017

Leatrice Simone “Shau Shqua Snok” Noriega, 71, Mayetta, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, at her home on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation.

She was born April 13, 1946, in Topeka, the daughter of Eugene White Hawk and Ruby M. Wabnum Shuckahosee. She attended school in Marty, S.D., and graduated from Delia High School. She also attended Washburn University.

Mrs. Noriega lived her earlier years on the reservation and had spent most of her adult years in Topeka. She worked for the State of Kansas in the SRS Department as a clerk and also worked as a secretary at I CARE, both in Topeka.

She was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and Drum Religion.

She was married to Ramon A. Noriega Sr. for more than 58 years. He survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Ramon “Kish” Noriega Jr., Topeka, and Wilson Noriega, Hutchinson; five sisters, Alexis Bailey, in Texas, and Ardegene White Hawk, Martyna White Hawk, Vevina White Hawk and Inez White Hawk, all in South Dakota; two brothers, Leslie Shuckahosee, Mayetta, and Eugenio White Hawk Jr., in South Dakota; two grandchildren, Simone Noriega and Santana Noriega; and a great-grandson, Kendrick Potts. She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Blanche Cook Rice; and four brothers, Robin Shuckahosee, Terry Shuckahosee, Robert Shuckahosee and Wilson Garcia Sr.

Drum services will be held Thursday evening at the Danceground Building. Burial will be held Friday afternoon in Mitchell Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
