Larry Koontz 1948-2016

 

Larry B. Koontz, 68, Pratt, died Monday, March 7, 2016.

He was born Jan. 25, 1948, in Augusta, the son of Jimmie Lloyd and Peggy Jo Jones Koontz. He graduated from Dodge City High School in 1966, attended Dodge City Community College and served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Mr. Koontz moved to Pratt in 1985 to work as street superintendent for the City of Pratt. He was promoted to public works director in 1988, then later promoted to public works director/electric superintendent, retiring in August 2006.

He had been a member of First Baptist Church of Dodge City and was currently attending Pratt Presbyterian Church.

He married Sharon Redinger in 1970 in Dodge City. They divorced. He married Betsy Sanders on Oct. 14, 1988, in Medicine Lodge. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Jimmie Koontz and Ryan Koontz and wife Shelly, all of Pratt; two stepsons, Craig Sanders and wife Becky, Chetopa, and Brian Sanders and wife Jenny, Topeka; five grandchildren, twins Alissa and Alexis Koontz, both of Pratt, and Nikki Sanders and fiancé Lane Rathjen, Austen and Jaylee Sanders, all of Chetopa; three step-grandchildren, Tanner Oberle, Kaylynn Oberle and Dawson Cox, all of Pratt; a sister, Linda Gleason and husband Butch, Dodge City; a brother, Mark Koontz and wife Cheryl, Dodge City; an adopted brother, Steve Koontz, Wichita; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Amanda Koontz.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pratt Presbyterian Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pratt County Lake Committee or Southwind Hospice, both of Pratt, or the Chetopa Little League. Ayres-Calbeck Mortuary, Pratt, is in charge of arrangements.
