John Mellies Jr. 1943-2020

John “Johnny” Carl Mellies Jr., Kansas City, passed away Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020.

He was born Nov. 18, 1943, in Clay Center, the son of John Carl Sr. and Virgie “Mae” (Kennedy) Mellies.

John attended Bateman Grade School and graduated from Netawaka High School in 1961. After graduation he farmed and then went to work for Rockwell Mfg. in Atchison. He later moved to Kansas City and worked for Armco Steel and GST until he retired.

He married Linda Rogers on Feb. 7, 1964, in Holton. They celebrated more than 55 years of marriage.

John loved boating and camping. The family spent a lot of time at Perry Lake. He never lost his love for working and restoring tractors. He also belonged to HACOA and loved to take his 1964 Corvan (Scooby Doo Mystery Machine) to parades and car shows. John was a member and formerly captain of the Prairie Township Fire Dept. in “Piper” Kansas City.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Mellies; two sons, Wesley (Kim) Mellies of Edwardsville and Shawn (Julie) Mellies of Basehor; a sister, Barbara Mellies of Holton; a brother, Art (Beth) Mellies of Netawaka; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life for John will be held at the Edwardsville Assembly Church of God, 643 Edwardsville Dr., Edwardsville on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. Dress “casual” and food/snacks will be provided.
