John Ackeret 1940-2021

John Arthur Ackeret, 81, of Wichita, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021, at Via Christi Village in Wichita.

He was born April 22, 1940, at Holton, the son of John Andrew and Nancy Caroline Hurst Ackeret. He graduated from Holton High School in 1959. He received both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Emporia State University.

John was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Oriskany as an avionics technician.

John had worked for Rockwell Collins Avionics in Wichita. He also taught high school in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Clearwater and taught at the college level at Washburn University and Butler Community College. He was a skilled woodworker, and he completed many beautiful projects throughout his life. John enjoyed attending concerts and sporting events, especially Wichita State basketball and volleyball games. He loved spending time with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James Ackeret and Bruce Ackeret.

Survivors include two sons, John “Morgan” Ackeret (Melody), Alexandria, Va., and Kyle Ackeret (Megan), Wichita; two daughters, Kerry Klein (Mark), Ellsworth, and Marisa Ackeret, Wichita; two brothers, Gary Ackeret (Judy) and Roger Ackeret, all of Topeka; a sister, Bonnie Foster (Chuck), Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Phillip-Charles Armstrong, Christin-Joy Armstrong, Emma Klein, Sara Klein, Greta Klein, Bella Ackeret and Sofie Ackeret; along with several nieces and nephews.

Memorial graveside services and inurnment will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Buck’s Grove Cemetery, west of Holton. Online condolences may be made at chapeloaksfuneralhome.com
