James Vanderblomen 1967-2023

James Allen Vanderblomen, 55, Topeka, formerly of Mayetta, died Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at Advena Living Home in Topeka.

He was born Aug. 30, 1967, in Topeka, the son of James Sylvester and Elizabeth A. Wahquahboshkuk Vanderblomen. He graduated from Royal Valley High School and later attended Baker University, earning his Certified Nurse’s Aide degree.

Mr. Vanderblomen served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a CNA for Presbyterian Manor. Most recently he worked as a carpenter and in maintenance for VA Hospital in Topeka.

He was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and the Native American Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Kati Ascott, Topeka, and Krista Vanderblomen and spouse Sydney Lopez, Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Richard Vanderblomen, Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Celeste Murphy, Mayetta; and two grandchildren, Kises Gallegos and Serenity Dell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Richard Lee Vanderblomen; and a daughter, Vanessa Bernie.

Native American services will be held Monday afternoon, March 20 at Nozhackum Hall. Burial with military honors presented by We-Ta-Se Post 410 will be held Tuesday morning, March 21 at Wezo Cemetery. Mercer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
