James Hurd 1946-2023

James L. Hurd, 76, of Hoyt, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

He was born Sept. 27, 1946, at Fort Scott, the son of Charles Hurd Jr. and Mary Katherine Harris Hurd. He graduated from Girard High School.

James had worked at Goodyear Tire in Topeka for 42 years and was a member of Steelworkers Local 307.

He married Sharon Kmiec. They were divorced. He later married Katherine Corwin and they were divorced.

James was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Hurd; and a nephew, Troy Philbrick.

Survivors include Sharon Gabriel, of the home; three sons, Michael Todd Hurd, Denver, Colo., Travis Scott Hurd (Kim), Topeka, and Brandon Dion Hurd (Shannon), Gouldsboro, Maine; his siblings, Sharon Zibell (Bill Stolzenberger), Mayetta, Chuck Hurd III (Diana), Topeka, Sue Philbrick, Wichita, and Sandy Halloran and Sheila Compton, both of Topeka; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt. Family and friends will meet from 10 a.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Hoyt Cemetery. James will lie in state from noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
